A Chinese-owned online retailer called Temu has been fined €200 million by the European Union because it allowed hazardous goods, such as faulty electronic chargers and unsafe baby toys, to be purchased from their site. The findings showed that most of the products did not pass safety measures and therefore posed risks to electrical shocks and even suffocation to children.

According to the EU's Digital Services Act, Temu qualifies as one of the "Very Large Online Platforms" whose responsibility is to ensure that their systems do not pose any risk to customers. Temu considers the fine to be disproportionate and that its systems have improved over time starting from 2024. Temu has to develop a solution to be submitted in mid-August.
